KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Knox County Board of Education plans to oppose a Tennessee law that would require school systems keep track of students’ immigration. It comes as the law — HB0793/SB0836 — sits in the Tennessee House.
During Monday’s board of education work session, the school board polished its list of proposed priorities for 2026. On the finished list is a priority titled Free Education for All Children.
“The Knox County Board of Education urges the General Assembly oppose any proposals requiring school districts to collect or monitor student immigration status, as they create legal risks, add administrative burdens, and distract from teaching and learning,” the proposed priority said…
