Maryville father pushes back against school vouchers, files lawsuit against state

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Dustin Park is the father of a high school freshman with Down syndrome who attends school in Blount County, park says the public school system in East Tennessee has made it all possible.

Park is one of ten parents and taxpayers who have filed a lawsuit against the state of Tennessee’s school voucher program.

Park moved to Maryville in 2016 after struggling to find a school in Chicago willing to support his son’s needs. His new neighbor suggested he look at a statewide voucher program for disabled students. However, Park said the state of Tennessee wanted him to waive his son’s rights, which are protected under the federal IDEA Act.

“I was exercising those rights for my son. And so, I was like, there’s nothing that I would do where I would forfeit those rights for my son. Those are crucial to him accessing the education that he deserves,” said Park…
