City of Knoxville holds meeting to discuss future of historic medical building

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Community leaders and members came together on Wednesday evening to discuss the future of a former hospital in Knoxville.

Serene Manor, which was built in 1933, was originally the Rosenwald Wing of Knoxville General Hospital. At the time, it was used for the treatment of Black people. It was also a privately run residential care facility, seeing some of the city’s first Black physicians perform surgery.

The city of Knoxville acquired the property in August 2024 following a public input process — now planning to issue a “Request for Proposals” for the reuse of the property…
