Knoxville officer charged with aggravated assault choked out family member, court docs say

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Adam Barnett, the Knoxville Police Department officer who was charged Monday with aggravated assault in Sevier County, choked a family member until they lost consciousness, according to court documents obtained by WVLT News.

It happened around 5:22 p.m. Monday, according to Barnett’s affidavit. The documents said a Sevier County deputy responded to a domestic assault call to find that the victim, Barnett’s family member, had gotten into an argument with the off-duty officer.

“[The victim] stated that during the argument, [Barnett] stated that he would choke/knock him out,” the affidavit said. “The defendant then spun him around and placed him into a choke hold with his right arm. [The victim] claimed that [Barnett] strangled him until he lost consciousness and woke up on the floor.”…
