KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — Records show scammers stole more than $750,000 from a Knox County government agency after workers fell for a spoofed email that appeared to come from a regular vendor.
The Public Building Authority, which manages public parking garages and government facilities for Knoxville and Knox County, received an email requesting a change to bank routing information. The email address looked nearly identical to the legitimate vendor’s — but records show two letters were reversed.
That small change was enough for scammers to redirect three-quarters of a million dollars…
