Body recovered after trench collapse at Big Ridge State Park, second victim hospitalized

UNION COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — The body of a second victim has been recovered after a trench collapse at Big Ridge State Park in Maynardville trapped two people on Thursday. The other man was rescued and hospitalized.

The victim’s body was recovered just before 6 p.m. and transported to the Knox County Regional Forensic Center.

Crews were able to rescue one man at 1:23 p.m. and he was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center via Lifestar, Union County Emergency Medical Service Director Andrew Reed said. He is considered to be in critical condition because of the amount of time he was in the ground. Reed added that the man was alert during the process.
