Knox County leaders weigh future leadership of troubled juvenile detention center

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — Knox County leaders are deciding the future of the county’s juvenile detention center, a facility that has faced months of turmoil and scrutiny.

The juvenile service center has a troubled history that includes allegations of mistreatment and isolation of young people, failures in administrative management and recent leadership upheaval. An oversight board made up of county commissioners is currently helping lead the facility through July 1 of next year — and now, that board is weighing what comes next.
