Knoxville family’s GoFundMe cloned by scammers, raising $12,500

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A GoFundMe page by a Knoxville family was copied by scammers who have reaped the benefits, making thousands of dollars.

GoFundMe scams are relatively rare. The company said fraudulent campaigns are less than 1/10 of a percent of all appeals, but, unfortunately, they do happen.

Heather Myers and her mother, Dorothy Adkins, compared look-alike websites: one was real, the other fraudulent. Myer’s brother-in-law, Mitchell Solomon, died unexpectedly on November 22, 2025. The 52-year-old self-employed landscaper had lots of friends.
