‘Still far too many’ Knoxville traffic fatalities down 45%

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Twenty-nine people died in crashes in 2025 in Knoxville, down 45% from the year before, the Knoxville Police Department said.

Last year saw the fewest traffic-related deaths on Knoxville roads since 2020. Of the 29, one was riding a bike, six were pedestrians, eight were riding motorcycles. Five were on the interstate, six on North Broadway and two each on Western Avenue and Chapman Highway, police said.

The number is down significantly compared to the last few years. KPD said there were 52 traffic fatalities in Knoxville in 2024 and 45 in 2023.

“While 29 traffic deaths are still far too many, I am encouraged by the strides that we made as a city in 2025,” Chief Paul Noel said. “Traffic safety is a top priority for our department, and I am proud of the collaborative and intentional efforts to reduce traffic fatalities. As we move into 2026, we are going to continue to rely on data to inform our traffic enforcement and education initiatives and lean on our partners [to] make our roads as safe as possible.”…
