Deputy Tucker Blakely’s widow asks court to hold insurance company accountable amid wrongful death lawsuit

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The widow of fallen Knox County Deputy Tucker Blakely has filed a motion in her wrongful death lawsuit, asking a judge to ensure the Progressive Casualty Insurance Company, which provided a homeowners insurance policy for the home where Blakely was fatally shot, pays what it is obligated to.

On October 1, 2023, Tucker Blakely and his partner responded to a domestic incident in the Hardin Valley area. During that call, the deputies encountered an armed man, Matthew Rose, 30, and gunfire was exchanged. Matthew Rose was pronounced dead at the scene and Blakely was taken to UT Medical Center, where he later died. In 2024, Katarina Blakely filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Angela Rose, who was married to Matthew Rose.

In an interview with 6 News, Katarina Blakely’s attorney, T. Scott Jones, explained that the motion requesting a declaratory judgment was filed after it was implied to them during depositions in the wrongful death lawsuit that Progressive Casualty Insurance Company would try to avoid providing the coverage it is obligated to through a homeowners policy.

According to the motion, Angela Rose and Matthew Rose owned the home where the incident happened and had a Progressive homeowner’s insurance policy that covered negligent or reckless acts. Jones said he believes Progressive will argue that it is not responsible to pay and paint Angela Rose’s alleged actions ahead of and during the domestic incident that Tucker Blakely responded to as intentional…
