Fired Clinton HS teacher charged in grade changing investigation takes plea deal

CLINTON, Tenn. (WATE) — One of the two former teachers who were fired in 2024 after an investigation into grade manipulation at Clinton High School has accepted a plea deal that could lead to his conviction being expunged.

On Friday, Attorneys Jeffery C. Coller and Travis E. Dorman, who represent Clay Turpin, issued a release saying Turpin had entered a judicial diversion agreement for misdemeanor charges.

Under the agreement, Turpin was sentenced to serve 11 months and 29 days on probation. Once that period is over, if Turpin complies with the terms of the agreement, he will be eligible to have the charges against him expunged, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

“Although we believe Clay had compelling legal defenses that could have resulted in the outright dismissal of his charges, the outcome reached today makes sense for Clay and allows him to avoid the time, expense, and stress involved in contesting the case further,” the attorneys wrote in a statement. “Clay looks forward to moving on with his life and career, and, a year from now, expects to do so with a clean record.”…
