Anthony Thompson Jr.’s family reaches deal with Knoxville officers

A settlement has been reached between three Knoxville police officers and the family of Anthony Thompson Jr., the 17-year-old who was shot and killed by a KPD officer inside an Austin-East Magnet High School bathroom in 2021.

The settlement has not been finalized or approved by a judge, but in a Jan. 13 filing, attorneys for the three officers involved in the shooting told the court “the parties were able to resolve the Plaintiff’s claim for denial of medical care, which is the Plaintiff’s only remaining claim in this action.”

At issue is the medical care provided to Thompson after he was shot. He lay dying on the floor of the bathroom for about five minutes before he was treated by a school nurse even as the officers on scene attended to one of their own who also was shot by a fellow officer…
