A new chapter in Knoxville’s housing narrative unfolded with the ribbon-cutting for the Overlook at Beaumont, an affordable housing complex and the first development in the ambitious Transforming Western Initiative. Knoxville Community Development Corporation (KCDC) and local officials came together to celebrate the opening of 76 mixed-income units aimed at revitalizing the local community. According to WVLT, KCDC Executive Director and CEO Ben Bentley emphasized that the initiative is a holistic approach to community transformation that ingeniously combines housing with access to services like education, employment, and healthcare.
The Overlook at Beaumont offers 31 subsidized, 30 affordable, and 15 market-rate apartments, a diverse mixture that aligns with the initiative’s goals to create a balanced community. “We have CAC as our people partner, really investing in resources for people to be able to get additional education to grow incomes,” Bentley told WATE. Mayor Indya Kincannon reflected on the project’s importance, recalling her family’s ties to the region and expressing hope for the community’s renewed choice and vibrancy.
Funded in part by a $40 million U.S. Housing and Urban Development Choice Neighborhoods grant and over $26 million from the city, the initiative represents a significant investment in regional development.
