Trying to save money at the grocery store? Start here

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — If you’ve ever walked out of the grocery store wondering how your total got so high, some of the biggest savings may start before you ever get to the checkout. Nutritionist Krystal Goodman with Klean Nourish says some of the biggest savings come from what you don’t buy. Pre-cut fruits and vegetables, pre-packaged meals, and processed snacks can quickly drive up your total.

“If you think about the fruits and the vegetables that are already cut up for us, yeah it takes down the time of having to prep, but it’s going to be more expensive than if you buy a whole apple instead of one that’s already sliced for you,” Goodman said.

How to save money on your electric bill

Buying foods in their most basic form is often cheaper per meal. Items like whole produce, rice, beans, oats, and eggs can be used across multiple meals.

“Things like lentils are another good option, or rice, and those price per serving is actually pretty cheap, especially if you’re not buying these brand names. You can always buy the store name instead and it ends up being a little cheaper for you,” she said…
