KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — With winter weather threatening much of the Southeastern U.S., the Tennessee Valley Authority said it is prepared and well-equipped to meet demand for electricity across the 80,000 square miles of its service region.
The federally-owned utility corporation is the nation’s largest public power system. TVA supplies power for over nine million people across seven states, including most of Tennessee.

TVA has spent millions to winterize its power grid since 2022, when Winter Storm Elliott caused rolling blackouts to be implemented, with upgrades ranging from additional insulation to heat tracing technology to prevent pipes from freezing.
Spokesperson Scott Brooks told 6 News that TVA’s winter readiness campaign began months ago, including more than 400 separate maintenance activities at its nuclear, hydro, gas, and coal power units.
