Knoxville Police release bodycam video of deadly shooting involving endangered child alert

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Knoxville Police Department has released body camera video from the shooting on January 28 that left a man dead as officers responded to an Endangered Child Alert at a Tillery Road apartment.

According to the sheriff’s office, on the morning of the shooting, KPD Special Crimes detectives were following up on credible information that a missing 15-year-old girl, whom the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation had issued an Endangered Child Alert for, was inside an apartment at North Park Apartments with Angel Melendez, 46, who was not related to the girl.

The detectives obtained warrants charging Melendez with concealing, harboring or hiding a runaway child, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and theft of a firearm.

According to KPD, at approximately 10:25 a.m., Special Operations Squad (SOS) personnel approached the apartment in an effort to safely recover the girl and arrest Melendez. The officers knocked and announced their presence for an extended period before entering the apartment with the owner’s consent…
