Knox County Schools may face staffing cuts next school year

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knox County School leaders are already looking ahead to the next school year, but part of that process could mean staffing cuts.

“Each year we go through an allocation process, a staffing allocation process, and each year it’s based on projected enrollment,” Said Jennifer Hemmelgarn, Assistant Superintendent of Business and Talent for Knox County Schools. “So, the number of students we expect to show up to school in August of the following year”.

KCS said that because of lower enrollment rates, they could be looking at losing around 60 teaching positions across the district. But, they say they’re hopeful some of those positions will be absorbed if any staff retire. Which they hope will help keep people staffed…
