Hiker rescued from remote area of Smokies after sending SOS

LOUISVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — An hiker was rescued from a remote area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and flown to a Knoxville hospital on Tuesday.

A Tennessee National Guard flight crew departed Joint Base McGhee-Tyson in a helicopter around 9:30 a.m. after authorities were notified of an injured hiker needing transport to a nearby hospital.

The hiker was suffering from severe cold-weather injuries and was able to send an emergency SOS by using a satellite communicator.

Just before 10 a.m., the helicopter arrived at the Double Springs Gap Shelter in a remote area of the park near the North Carolina border. The flight paramedic rendered aid at the site before flying the patient to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

The aircraft landed at the hospital around 10:25 a.m. and the patient was rushed to the emergency room. An update on the hiker’s condition was immediately available…
