Second infant surrendered at Knoxville Fire Department baby box

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Friday morning saw a second infant surrendered at the Knoxville Fire Department’s Station 17 on Western Avenue. The station is home to a Safe Haven Baby Box, which allows parents in distress to release their children anonymously.

“Firefighters immediately responded, opened the secure compartment, and found a newborn baby who appeared to be in excellent health,” a news release from the fire department said. “The infant was promptly evaluated on-scene and transported to Children’s Hospital for a full medical check-up. The baby is reported to be doing well and is currently under the care of hospital staff.”

Tennessee has a safe haven law that allows those in need to safely surrender a newborn up to 45 days old at certain locations. According to the fire department, the law acts as a safeguard, allowing parents to release children without fear of prosecution…
