$10M in federal funding awarded to UT for new buses, transportation changes

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – More than 10 million federal dollars will help the University of Tennessee expand its T bus fleet on its Knoxville campus. A Friday news release from the university said UT had received two grants from the Federal Transit Administration and the Department of Transportation.

UT was awarded $9.8 million by the Federal Transit Administration’s Low- or No-Emission Grant Program. The grant provides funding to state and local groups to buy environmentally friendly buses. Of the 101 projects funded throughout the last year, the release said, UT was one of two universities to receive money.

“By expanding transit service, partnering with Knoxville Area Transit and the City of Knoxville and rebalancing parking allotments, we’ve already taken deliberate steps to transform how our campus community travels, and this grant will facilitate another big step toward our vision of reducing vehicle traffic on campus,” said Executive Director of Parking and Transportation Tanara Teal-Tate…
