Rescue farm in Jefferson County grows years after a family promise

DANDRIDGE, Tenn. — A local woman is carrying on the legacy of her beloved aunt by rescuing animals in Jefferson County.

Susan Porter knows the pain of watching a loved one succumb to Alzheimer’s first-hand after watching her aunt Helen suffer over the years. In Tennessee, around 129,000 people aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

“Aunt Helen and Furman Bowers, they were my favorite aunts,” Porter said. “When we would come up in the summer, they would lead us around in the barn lot on their horses, Lady and King.”…
