Knox County Sheriff’s Office warns of scam calls from people claiming to be officers

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — The Knox County Sheriff’s Office warned of scam calls from people demanding money while impersonating law enforcement officers or federal agents.

KCSO described one scam where victims are called by a number that appears local. The caller then claims to be a KCSO employee, telling victims that a loved one is in jail and demanding money to have them released with an ankle monitor.

The office also described another incident where a scammer called someone claiming that her abuser was going to be released from jail. Then, in a second call, the scammer told the victim she needed to send money through an app to pay for a GPS monitor.

In a third scam, a caller pretends to be an FBI agent and claims to be investigating the victim’s bank account, KCSO said. The scammer then asks for personal or financial information, pressuring the victim to move or “protect,” their money…
