Over $22M grant finalized for Chapman Highway safety upgrades, but project won’t begin until 2030

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Safety improvements are planned for a busy — and deadly — stretch of Chapman Highway after federal and local leaders finalized more than $20 million in funding for the project, according to the Knoxville City Council. However, the construction process won’t begin for about four years.

On Monday, March 9, the city announced that a $17.8 million grant from the United States Department of Transportation was finalized through the Safe Streets and Roads for All program. The city said it will contribute a $4.45 million match, bringing the total project cost to about $22.25 million.
