Batteries cause Knoxville apartment fire

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Knoxville Fire Department responded to an apartment fire Wednesday morning. It happened around 6 a.m. and was caused by something you likely have in your home: batteries.

Crews responded to 604 Waterfront Dr., Assistant Chief Mark Wilbanks said, after getting a call that a hoverboard was on fire.

“The caller reported that he had attempted to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher but was unable to control the fire,” Wilbanks said. “On the arrival of the first Knoxville Fire Department units, light smoke was reported coming from an apartment on the third floor. KFD crews quickly entered the unit and located a hoverboard/lithium battery fire. KFD contained and extinguished the fire within three minutes of arrival.”…
