‘He will never be forgotten’ | University of Tennessee police sergeant dies after battle with cancer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The University of Tennessee Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its most respected and cherished members.

UTPD said Sgt. Phil Whaley passed away Wednesday morning after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of service, compassion and an unwavering dedication to others.

“Sgt. Whaley began his journey with the University of Tennessee on August 25, 2001, serving initially as a Community Service Officer,” UTPD said in a social media post. “Through hard work, determination, and a clear calling to serve, he completed the law enforcement academy and officially joined UTPD as a police officer on August 4, 2003. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, earning the title of Sergeant, a role in which he led with integrity, humility, and a genuine commitment to both his colleagues and the campus community.”…
