Lafayette community advocate, journalist celebrated for covering Creole culture dies

As a writer, historian and advocate, Ruth Foote was driven to help others by sharing their stories.

On Wednesday, June 10, friends and colleagues confirmed in online reports that Foote has died after a battle with cancer. They shared messages of mourning that spoke to her lasting impact across the area — from her days as a reporter at The Daily World in Opelousas, as a longtime writer for Creole Magazine, to her work with Lafayette civil rights advocacy group Move the Mindset.

Milton Arceneaux, with the Creole Culture project, said on social media that Foote “wrote about us when nobody else would.”…
