The American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter in Opelousas as St. Landry Parish officials prepare for potential flooding and evacuations in low-lying areas.
The shelter is operating at the Yambilee Building, 1939 W. Landry St., in Opelousas. It opened in response to mandatory and voluntary evacuations issued in parts of the parish as rising water from Avoyelles Parish threatens local waterways.
