Free produce, pantry staples distributed at Lafayette ‘Food Is Medicine’ event

LAFAYETTE, La. (NEWS 15) — A mobile pantry event offering free fresh produce, shelf-stable foods, and health resources was held in Lafayette as part of an effort to address food insecurity affecting one in six people in Louisiana.

Aetna Better Health of Louisiana organized the “Food Is Medicine” event on Tuesday. In addition to free boxes of fresh produce and pantry staples, organizers provided community members with nutrition and health resources.

“You know, when you get free groceries, everybody’s happy about that,” Nikesha Rodrigue of Aetna Better Health of Louisiana said. “So, you know, of course, people are always happy to see us when we roll up. But again, it’s more than just that for us. It’s so that they know that we actually care, and we’re not just here to … because we’re an insurance company. We’re here because we wanna show that they actually mean something to them, and we wanna make sure that we are addressing their actual needs.”…
