Rent keeps climbing in much of the country, but plenty of Southern cities still offer real breathing room for anyone stretching a fixed income. Trading a big-city zip code for a smaller Southern town could mean paying hundreds less for housing every month, without giving up mountains, lakes, or a lively downtown.
These nine cities all have a median monthly rent of $1,325 or less, leaving more of a retirement check for everything else.
