Heavy rain possible Saturday, here’s what to expect throughout the day

A strong storm system is approaching the area from the west. We’ll see increasing clouds for tonight after a nice day weather-wise. Overnight lows will be in the mid-50s with south winds increasing overnight as well.

Rainfall begins to work into the area through the morning hours. Global models yesterday had most of the rainfall, at least the heaviest rainfall, holding off until the mid-to-late afternoon. However, high-resolution models, which came in today, have sped up the timeline, now having the bulk of the rain moving in through the late morning and early afternoon hours.

Expect mainly light showers through about 10 am, with storms getting heavier from 10 am-3 pm. Light rain could linger through about 6 pm, ending from west to east.

Moisture levels in the atmosphere are nearly double the normal range and atmospheric lift will be strong with diffluent flow aloft. This means storms will be capable of having high rainfall rates, on the order of two to two-and-a-half inches per hour, which could lead to some flash flooding, especially for areas that receive multiple thunderstorms. Widespread rain totals of 1-2 inches appear likely but isolated higher amounts of 3-4 inches could be possible.
