Dud Lastrapes remembered for ‘visionary’ improvements, leading Lafayette through oil bust

In 1985, when the oil industry went bust and many oilfield businesses were closing, Republican Lafayette Mayor William Dudley Lastrapes did something that has been described as brave and genius: He asked voters to approve a 1-cent sales tax and $100 million bond proposal to build roads, bridges and drainage projects.
