Lafayette Police involved in New Year’s Day gunfight, several injured

LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) — Several people were injured in a gunfight in Lafayette that included an officer-involved shooting early New Year’s Day, authorities said.

Lafayette Police Department responded at approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday to the 2100 block of NE Evangeline Thruway following reports of multiple gunshots. Upon arrival, an officer encountered two groups of individuals actively exchanging gunfire. The officer discharged their firearm in response to the threat, officials said.

Several people were transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident. State Police said the person shot by police was taken to a local hospital for treatment, where they remain in stable condition.

The Louisiana State Police has been asked to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
