Jeanerette’s first full-time Black police officer and assistant police chief, known as ‘Pop the Cop,’ passes away

JEANERETTE, La. — The City of Jeanerette sadly announces the passing of one of our iconic figures of the community, Willie “Pop the Cop” Wilson Jr.

Willie was the City of Jeanerette’s first full-time African American police officer. He would also become the first African American to serve as assistant chief of police.

His work in public service also included him being the first African American to have been elected as alderman at large/mayor pro tem from 1999 to 2003…
