News 15 Investigates: Alleged victim of domestic abuse by Opelousas police sergeant calls charges ‘bogus’

An Opelousas police sergeant is facing a domestic violence charge after an alleged incident outside Evangeline Downs but the alleged victim claims the charges were unfounded. Sgt. Romalis Thomas, 39, of Opelousas, was arrested by Louisiana State Police on a charge of domestic abuse battery after an encounter with Cathy Smith, the mother of his 7-year-old daughter. Smith said she and Thomas briefly spoke in the parking lot of Evangeline Downs. “No, he did not beat me,” said Smith.
