Two Acadiana area teams advance to LHSAA Softball State Championships

SULPHUR, La. ( KLFY ) — After lightning in the area near North Frasch Softball Complex in Sulphur suspended semifinal action in the LHSAA softball tournament, play resumed on Saturday. Two Acadiana area schools took to the field looking to take one step closer to the state championship.

In Division I Select, #2 St. Thomas More would square off against #6 Mt. Carmel . The Cubs and the Cougars battled early on, scoring 5 of 7 runs in the first frame. St. Thomas More would advance defeating Mt. Carmel 6-1 in 7 innings. The Cougars look to add the programs 9th Softball State championship to the trophy case. St. Thomas More will face #4 John Curtis at 3:00 PM on Sunday.

Meanwhile in Division IV Select, #2 Opelousas Catholic continued their quest for a repeat taking on #6 St. John on Saturday. The Vikings would find themselves in a pitchers duel with both teams going scoreless through 5 innings. Opelousas Catholic would eventually break the scoring seal and go on to take a hard fought 1-0 win to advance to the State Championship game. Opelousas Catholic will have to take down #5 Holy Savior Menard in hopes of rewriting the school history books. First pitch between the Eagles and Vikings is set for 3:00 PM on Sunday in Sulphur.
