Voters in St. Martinville say no to city’s 127-year-old charter

The city of St. Martinville will now be governed under the state’s Lawrason Act after voters opted to abandon the city 125-year-old charter on Saturday.

Citizens voted overwhelmingly to change from the city’s 1898 charter to the Lawrason Act, with 67% approving, according to unofficial voting results. Over 1,400 people cast a ballot for a 38.5% turnout.

The city now joins the over 240 villages, towns, and cities governed under the Lawrason Act, a uniform set of laws and guidelines that mandate how the state’s cities, towns and village can operate…
