The Segus Jolivette Act was signed into law recently in Louisiana in honor of a Lafayette Police officer killed in line of duty.
The new law adds enhanced sentencing for second-degree murder if one violently resists arrests and would allow for those selling drugs to be charged with manslaughter if a death occurs.
An early version of the bill, House Bill 11, would have required people to serve up to 50% of their sentence on their third felony offense, and 75% after the fourth and subsequent offenses and also allowed prior convictions to be known to a jury. Though those measure were removed from the final version, Rep. Chad Boyer, who authored the bill, said there are plans to address those provisions in the next legislative session…
