In the silence of the ‘forest primeval’: Paddling through summer on Lake Martin with a friend

As Henry W. Longfellow said, “This is the forest primeval.”

Those words have stuck with me since I memorized part of “Evangeline” in ninth grade, but they’ve rung truer since I first paddled through one of Acadiana’s ancient cypress forests.

In late fall, winter and spring, canoeing on St. Martin Parish’s Lake Martin is one of my favorite things to do. Last week, against my better judgment, the forest primeval was calling.
