Vacant house catches fire on Eleventh Street in Lafayette; homeless squatters believed to blame

Lafayette firefighters responded to a fire at a house that neighbors said has been vacant for about a year. It happened on Eleventh Street at SW Evangeline Thruway on Saturday, August 16, around 7:30 p.m. Firefighters said the house was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. Officials said crews managed to get the blaze under control within 20 minutes, although the house sustained heavy damage. A neighbor reported the fire after noticing smoke coming from the property.
