This Lafayette mother and son hope to turn historic landmark into community gathering space

A new chapter is unfolding for a local family in Lafayette’s Sterling Grove Historic District, where a historic church is being transformed into a wedding and event venue.

Originally built in 1941 by an all-Black battalion at Camp Claiborne and relocated to Lafayette in 1947, the former Davidson Memorial Methodist Church will be The Wilyard, an elegant destination for weddings, receptions and community gatherings. The project is led by Cameron Theyard and his mother, Nicole Theyard, an educator preparing for retirement.
