Hope on parade: Fisher Whitaker’s 9th birthday celebrated by community ahead of cancer treatment

Nine-year-old Fisher Whitaker has been forced to give up a lot of the basic things every child should have after being diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year, but his parents and the City of New Iberia showed up Monday afternoon to give him a birthday celebration to show him all of the support he has in the community.

San Jacinto Circle in Acadian Acres was transformed into a parade route that centered around Fisher’s grandmother’s home, where he was waiting with friends and family as cars passed with gifts and well-wishes for his birthday.

His mother, Megan Meyers, said the birthday celebration was an idea that took off after Fisher’s diagnosis in March. Fisher and his family have stayed in hospitals, even traveling to Memphis, in order to deal with the diagnosis and Meyers said she wanted a birthday that would show Fisher he could still have a normal life…
