CROWLEY – Catholic High of New Iberia looked unstoppable for two quarters Friday night, building a commanding 28-0 lead over perennial power Notre Dame. But by the end of the night, the Panthers were walking off the field stunned, falling 35-34 in overtime after failing to convert a potential game-winning two-point play.
Catholic (3-1) opened the game with precision, pounding the Pioneers on the ground and striking through the air. Senior QB Xander LaBauve connected with Khylon Edwards on the opening drive for a deep touchdown pass that stunned the Pios. LaBauve kept the ball himself three more times to help CHS jump out to a commanding 28-0 lead.
The offense wasn’t the only unit that was firing on all cylinders in the opening half. The Panthers’ defense forced two fumbles and snatched two interceptions from Notre Dame and seemed firmly in control heading into the locker room…
