Cattle industry at record highs for beef

ABBEVILLE, La. (KLFY) — The Louisiana Cattle Festival in Abbeville is highlighting the state’s cattle industry, which is experiencing record-high beef prices due to historically low cattle numbers.

The festival, running through Sunday, celebrates the contributions of cattle ranchers to Louisiana’s economy with parades, contests, and beef dishes. Cattleman Randall Perrin of Vermilion Oaks Ranch and also the 75th King of the Louisiana Cattle Festival notes that the current market conditions are favorable for ranchers, as beef prices have never been higher.

“It’s an exciting time right now to be in the cattle industry because prices are higher now than they’ve ever been.” Perrin said. “It’s record high prices. The cattle numbers in the United States are at the lowest numbers in 75 years. So that’s why short supply with good demand, prices go up. It does concern me a little bit that the meat prices are so high that at some point I’m afraid we’re going to price ourselves out of the market. So that concerns me some. But if you’re a cattleman right now, you’re excited because you have a chance to make a little money.”…
