As Lafayette sprawls, rural residents pay the price

When Brett and Susan Patin bought property and built a home in an unincorporated part of Lafayette Parish near Brett’s hometown of Broussard in 2023, they thought they had found their little slice of paradise.

“We came here to retire, to settle down for a peaceful living,” Brett says.

But now, that peaceful country life, hemmed in by cane stalks to the east and the couple’s vegetable garden to the south, is at risk. A planned subdivision would cram 146 single-family houses onto the fields behind and in front of their home…
