Further details have emerged from Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La., after an incident on the evening of Nov. 22 saw a field of speeding Quarter Horses have to veer around an oncoming ambulance along the rail.
Javier Torres, regional manager for the Jockeys’ Guild, said he was able to get in touch with stewards at Evangeline on the morning of Nov. 23.
“Their initial take was that person driving the ambulance was new, it was maybe their second day on the job,” Torres said. “Of course, the stewards’ attention was on the horses in the starting gate, so they didn’t see the ambulance driving up the rail until everyone else did and it was too late.”…
