Final Approval Secured for Coulee Ile De Cannes Detention Ponds, Clearing Way for Lafayette Flood Control Project

The Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) has received final approval from the Louisiana Division of Administration’s Office of Facility Planning and Control to complete the Coulee Ile De Cannes (CIDC) detention ponds. This approval removes the last regulatory and technical barriers that have delayed the project since August 2023. Construction is scheduled to resume in early January 2026 and is expected to take 75 working days.

The CIDC detention ponds are located north of Duhon Road in Lafayette, Louisiana. They are part of the Bayou Vermilion Flood Control Project, which aims to reduce flooding along the Vermilion River. The project involves building detention ponds at two sites in Lafayette Parish. The CIDC site includes four ponds. Rigid Constructors will complete the remaining work, following designs by HDR Engineering. The cost for this phase is $983,965.50, funded with local resources. This funding will also be used to match future state funding for related projects.

Work at the CIDC site was delayed for over two years due to missing engineering designs, federal permits, and state approvals needed to connect the ponds to the coulee.
