This year, like every year, Groundhog Day will fall on Feb. 2, marking the midpoint between winter solstice and the spring equinox.

Groundhog Day in the U.S. is a tradition where a groundhog is observed as he emerges from his burrow and either sees its shadow or does not.

After coming out of its burrow, if a groundhog sees its shadow, then it’s believed that winter will last another six weeks. However, if it doesn’t see its shadow, then it’s believed that spring will come early.
