As Mardi Gras approaches, Lafayette Consolidated Government is alerting residents, businesses, and visitors that barricades will soon line major roadways along the city’s parade route.
According to Lafayette Police Department officials, Public Works crews will begin placing barricades at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 5, starting downtown at Jefferson and Simcoe Streets and extending along the route toward Johnston and Vermilion Streets.
Where Barricades Go First
Crews return at 8:00 a.m. Friday, February 6, continuing from Johnston and Vermilion toward Johnston Street and North College Road near the Albertsons shopping area, then along North College Road to Cajun Field at Gate 1 on Reinhardt Drive. Turning lanes and major crossovers will remain accessible where possible.
Police say streets on and around the parade route will close one hour before each parade begins and stay closed until crowds clear and it is safe for vehicles.
Early Parade Weekend Schedule
Parades begin that first weekend with Krewe de Canailles on Friday night, followed Saturday by the Krewe of Carnivale en Rio. After Saturday night’s parade, crews will shift barricades aside and begin cleanup along the full 4.3 mile route.
Barricades Return For Mardi Gras Week
A similar setup begins again Thursday, February 12, with more parades scheduled through Mardi Gras Day, including the Children’s Parade, Krewe of Bonaparte, Queen Evangeline, King Gabriel, the Lafayette Mardi Gras Festival Parade, and the Independent Parade.
