Superintendent speaks on Opelousas High school merger

ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY) — The St. Landry Parish School Board voted unanimously this week to merge Opelousas Junior High students into Opelousas Senior High beginning next school year. The decision will result in more than 800 students joining the high school campus this August.

St. Landry Parish Superintendent Milton Batiste III said the merger was necessary to prevent a state takeover of the junior high school, which has faced several years of low academic grades. The move is designed to create new educational opportunities, including access to high school credits and expanded athletic and music programs for seventh and eighth grade students.
