60 people arrested, 70 roosters seized in Louisiana cockfight raid

OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) — About 60 people were arrested and 70 roosters seized in a major raid on a cockfight near Opelousas on Saturday, authorities said.

John Eddie Lachapelle, 36, of Opelousas, whom officials described as “the property owner and principal organizer of the cockfight event,” is charged with cockfighting, possession of Schedule II drugs and illegal carrying of weapons in the presence of crime or drugs.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said his office received an anonymous tip on Saturday of a cockfight in progress on the property of 854 Raiders Road, northwest of Opelousas.

“It was determined that a large gathering of persons transporting fighting roosters was actively taking place,” Guidroz said. “I gathered together elements of our entire Investigative Division, from CID, to Narcotics, Juvenile Detectives and Sex Offender Detectives to provide sufficient manpower to handle the large gathering.”…
